Murray, H. J. R. A History of Chess. Oxford University Press, 1913.
This tome is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works on the origins and development of chess. First published in 1913, this monumental study traces the game's history from its earliest known origins in India through its spread across Persia, the Islamic world, and into Europe. Murray meticulously examines how chess evolved over the centuries, covering the various forms it has taken, the cultural contexts in which it was played, and the notable figures who contributed to its popularity.
This detailed, scholarly work remains an essential resource for chess historians and enthusiasts alike. In addition to its historical analysis, the book includes discussions of the evolution of chess pieces, rule changes, and variations of the game across different regions and eras. A History of Chess offers both an academic and accessible narrative, making it indispensable for anyone looking to understand chess’s profound impact on culture and strategy over the last millennium.
This is a black cloth-wrapped hardback book with gilt title on the spine. The book is in very good condition with an owner's label on the first sheet, and no marks or highlighting. I do not know if this book was originally issued with a dust jacket, as we did not receive one when we originally bought it. This seems like it might be a later reprinting of the original 1913 edition, but this copy has no other date than 1913. It's dimensions are approximately 9½"tall x 6½"wide x 2¼"thick. ISBN 9780198274032 / 0198274033.
I am asking $110.
